Legislation is ever changing and on 1 October 2024 the Building Regulations Approved Document Part T (Toilets) came into force which applies to the design and layout of sanitary accommodation in new non-domestic premises or those undergoing a material change of use.

It focuses on the provision of dedicated male and female facilities rather than shared gendered facilities. Self-contained and self-contained ambulant facilities that contain a toilet, wash basin and bin may continue to be universal. The size of the cubicles and provisions of fittings is also comprehensively covered.

Part T is intended to be read in conjunction with Part M, Part F, and other documentation dependent on the nature of the building, such as Sport England’s guidance on ‘Accessible Facilities’; or the School Premises (England) Regulations 2012 / the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014.

If the premises are listed, full compliance with Part T may not be achievable, although compliance as far as is practicable in agreement with Building Control will apply.

HSSP Architects’ design team keeps up to date with changes to legislation which gives clients peace of mind and assurance knowing their projects will comply.
