The team from HSSP Architects love coming together for social and fun events, so this year we decided to hold a Mince Pie Taste Off as we gear up for the festive season!
Those who like mince pies joined in with this tasty experiment. Each were given a quarter of seven assorted mince pies to blind taste, which varied from supermarkets own label, big brands and artisan made. To avoid any cheating occurring, they were prepared out of the sight of prying eyes and numbered!
The ‘judges’ had the whole day to taste the pieces whilst cleansing their palate between each one, and then giving their verdict as to which had the best pastry, the tastiest filling, was best overall, and their favourite.
Needless to say, much debating occurred as they munched their way through their pieces, which came from:
1 – Tesco finest all butter pastry mince pies
2 – Tesco mince pies
3 – Lyons mince pies
4 – Morrisons lattice mince pies
5 – Mr Kipling deep filled mince pies
6 – Mrs Hurst (Angela’s mum)
7 – Wild Fig Catering, Pera Business Park
Tesco’s Finest and Wild Fig Catering’s mince pies battled for supremacy, with the results as follows:
Best pastry – Wild Fig Catering
Best filling – Tesco’s Finest
Best overall – Wild Fig Catering
Favourite – a very close-run call with 5 of the team preferring Tesco’s Finest versus 6 who preferred Wild Fig Catering’s!
It was an enjoyable team activity, so we will be looking to do some more tastings in 2023.
