News - Tutor IL

HSSP Architects have long supported the next generation along the architectural career pathway and also have success with home grown talent.

James Botterill started here on work experience and eventually returned as a director. Samantha Griffiths joined as a Part 2, then undertook her Part 3 with HSSP’s full support and qualified, and has subsequently become one of our associates. Ian Lowe joined us as a Part 1 year out placement, worked as an architectural technologist for many years taking his Parts 2 and 3 along the way to become a qualified architect, and he too become one of our associates.

Ian has a natural technical ability and a thirst for acquiring knowledge, and whilst at De Montfort University for his Masters (Part 2), Ian was awarded the highest mark for Construction Technology they had issued for over a decade. He also scooped First in Class for Comprehensive Thesis, Professional Studies and Technology & Environment, and is the reason they invited him back to become an ad-hoc tutor.

Having been through the career pathway himself and being so technically attuned, Ian is perfect for passing his knowledge to the next generation and is currently part time tutoring Construction Technology at De Montfort University. We speak to Ian to see how this years’ group of students are doing:

“My group have the emphasis on renovation and re-use, low impact materials, reducing energy consumption and wastewater, and responding to the human elements of architecture and not just the bricks and mortar side of the sector.

“They are working on highly bespoke schemes that are innovative and creative and I am more so impressed this year. I do enjoy tutoring and seeing the architects of tomorrow coming through and being ‘on the edge of avant-garde architecture’.

“The studio spaces in the university are beautiful and are complemented with break out spaces to encourage cross pollination of ideas from different arts.”

Ian’s attitude is that no issue is insurmountable; everything is possible, it just needs carefully designing. It’s like his students, everyone has the capability to achieve, they just need to put the work in.
