Most people think of sustainability as ‘green’ credentials but it goes far beyond that and encompasses social, cultural and environmental considerations, and we should foster sustainable living in all aspects of our lives.
The team have varied backgrounds and life experiences in relation to environmental considerations and sustainability, but we are all united in the thinking that change is necessary.
This too is echoed by 1254 other architects practices (as of 19 October 2022) who, as well as ourselves, have signed the UK Architects Declare Climate and Biodiversity Emergency. HSSP Architects signed it in 2019 and it is encouraging to see the level of signatures has increased since that time and continues to do so. https://www.architectsdeclare.com/
The declaration was founded by architects and shows a commitment to combatting climate change and biodiversity loss. Buildings and construction account for a staggering amount of energy related carbon dioxide emissions as well having significant impact on natural habitats, wild species and flora and fauna.
This was initially London centric but the signatories are nationwide, so regional groups have been formed to create more localised steering groups.
Thomas Glenn, one of our Architectural Assistants who is also HSSP’s Sustainability Consultant and a Certified Passivhaus Designer, was a part host at the inaugural meeting for the Midlands area. Two speakers covered ‘Easy wins in sustainable design’, which was then followed by a series of breakout discussion rooms to really get the conversation flowing for the 40 attendees.
Moving forwards together with our clients, our endeavour is to create sustainable designs that embody carbon efficiency, encourage active lifestyles and truly embrace sustainable living. These changes require longer term thinking, but will be for the good of all of us and the future generations to follow. We cannot rewind the damage that has been done, but we can all play our part in shaping our futures.
